Preparing for Your 2013 Toxic Substance Reduction Plan
The Deadline for Phase II - Toxic Substance Reduction Plans is
December 31, 2013
Implementation of Ontario’s Toxics Reduction Act (TRA – O.Reg. 455/09) has been several years in the making. Since TRA was introduced on January 1, 2010, compliance with TRA require tracking, quantifying, and reporting annually on prescribed toxic substances used, created, released, disposed, transferred and contained in final products. However, the next deadline for the actual “toxics reduction” portion of the TRA, specifically; Phase II of TRA implementation, is approaching!
What is the purpose of the TRA?
Prior to the TRA, environmental regulations in Ontario were
generally focused on limiting the amount of toxic substances that
“emanate” from
companies/industries (a.k.a. limiting “end-of-pipe” toxics).
In contrast, the focus of the TRA is the preparation of Toxics
Substance Reduction Plans (TSRPs).
A TSRP is intended to
reduce the amount of toxics that are “input” into a company’s
process(es) before they can be emitted, discharged, or disposed to
the natural environment.
